NEWARK, N.J. — A year after implementing a new anti-bullying policy, New Jersey education officials have released data citing 12,024 instances of harassment, intimidation and bullying reported in the 2011-2012 school year.
Signed into law by Gov. Chris Christie in 2011, the bill requires all New Jersey schools to have anti-bullying programs and coordinators. Additionally, schools must report any instances of bullying to the state, reports ABC News.
The Woodbridge Township School District, which has more than 13,000 students, had 177 reported incidents — the most in the state. The second largest school district in the state, Newark Public Schools, which has more than 39,000 pupils last year, reported 105 bullying occurrences.
