N.C. Governor Signs Private College Police Records Bill

Published: June 12, 2013

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory signed into law on Wednesday a bill that makes police records at private universities available to the public.

NC142 was prompted by a lawsuit filed by an Elon University student journalist who requested complete copies of a 2010 arrest and incident report. School officials and campus police provided the student with the arrest report and the first page of the incident report; however, they did not give the journalist access to full documents.

Now, police departments at all North Carolina private colleges will be required to disclose arrest details and 9-1-1 calls when requested, reports Elon Local News.

Elon University issued a statement in support of the law.
