CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) officials have approved spending $19 million to improve security at schools throughout the district.
The majority of elementary and middle schools will install security cameras this spring and summer. The cameras will feed images to school officers and CMS police, Charlotte Observer reported.
The district also plans to install panic buttons and upgrade phones and entry systems that allow office staff to screen visitors. A new sign-in system will scan driver’s licenses and perform an instant background check.
All schools throughout the district, including high schools, will install electronic door locks.
Additionally, CMS plans to install technology that will allow emergency responders to communicate by radio inside schools.
