COLUMBUS – The number of mumps cases continues to rise at Ohio State University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The contagious disease has affected as many as 224 individuals in central Ohio, with at least 139 cases linked to students and staff members at OSU, The Global Dispatch reports.
Meanwhile, the University of Wisconsin-Madison has reported five cases, up from three cases reported about 10 days ago.
Mumps causes painful swelling of the salivary glands. Other symptoms include fever, body aches and headaches.

Most people who have received the mumps vaccine are usually protected for life, although mumps can occur in previously immunized person, The Global Dispatch reports.
