The University of Toledo, Kent State University, Ohio University and Central State University will be getting bomb-sniffing dogs through the Ohio Homeland Security program, while Cleveland State University’s dog, Rex, a German Shepard, will also be receiving additional training to be part of general patrol operations.
The dogs are used if there are security threats, for security sweeps and to help local law enforcement agencies, according to The Republic. By having the dogs at the universities, officials are developing a network of handlers and the ability to help out law enforcement agencies in their area. There is also a possibility the dogs could be used to help out when Cleveland hosts the 2016 Republican National Convention.
All expenses to buy, train and equip the dogs are paid for by federal grant money and the state Homeland Security funds.
