MILFORD, Pa. – According to the Times Herald-Record and Fox News, an estimated 10 percent of middle and high school students in the Delaware Valley School District, which serves around 3,000 students, are infected with a sexually transmitted disease (STD). The Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is now searching for students who are at risk for HIV.
Additionally, as many as two dozen female students have tested positive for pregnancy. Officials also say students as young as 12 year old have reported being sexually active.
Maternal and Family Health Services, a non-profit health clinic in the area, alerted district officials of the alarming figures, citing that more than 300 students have contracted an STD. On June 15, parents received letters informing them of the situation.
The district’s health curriculum emphasizes abstinence; however, classes discussing safer sex practices and STDs are offered. Presently, the Board of Education is revising the health curriculum.
Earlier this year, the CDC released a report that cited one in four teenage girls between the ages of 14 and 19 has contracted an STD.
