MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A growing number of homeowners have installed small residential shelters called safe rooms following several deadly tornadoes in the past year.
This is especially true in communities such as Montgomery and Tuscaloosa in Alabama and in Joplin, Mo., where tornadoes destroyed schools and neighborhoods, The Associated Press reports. Some states are offering grants and other incentives to help pay for residential shelters.
The interest in safe rooms was influenced by the 358 tornado deaths in the South and the 161 deaths in Joplin. This year, more than 60 people have been killed by tornados so far.
