STOCKHOLM—Angry protesters at Uppsala University violently interrupted the lecture of a Swedish artist who angered Muslims by depicting the Prophet Mohammed as dog.
Lars Vilks was head-butted by an angry student sitting in the front row of his lecture, breaking Vilks glasses, but otherwise leaving the lecturer uninjured, according to the Associated Press. Prior to the incident, a group of 15 had been shouting and trying to interrupt the lecture; however, university officials said a peaceful demonstration occurred outside the university before Vilks started to speak. As many as 250 students attended the lecture, which resulted in students clashing with security guards. University officials contacted security and police before the lecture to ensure Vilks’ safety. A man and woman in their 20s were arrested on suspicion of using violence against police.
Vilks’ drawing was printed in a Swedish newspaper nearly a year after 12 Danish newspaper cartoons of the prophet sparked angry protests in Muslim countries in 2006. The drawing has led to numerous death threats against Vilks who had a $100,000 bounty on his head in September 2007 from al-Quaida.
