Missouri Middle School Student Fires Gun

Published: October 9, 2006

JOPLIN, Mo. – A 13-year-old male student carried an assault rifle into his school Oct. 9, pointed it at two of his classmates and then fired a warning shot into the air before the gun jammed. No one was injured during the ordeal.

According to authorities, the seventh grader, who was wearing a mask and green trench coat, was fascinated by the Columbine massacre.

During the attack, which police say was planned well in advance, the boy pointed his Mac 90 at two students. An administrator attempted to convince the suspect not to go through with the shooting, but the boy refused, pointing his gun toward the ceiling and shooting. Soon after, the rifle jammed.

A note found in his backpack said that he had placed bombs around the school, but no explosives were found.
