WYOMING, Minn. — A tragic incident unfolded on Christmas Day at M Health Fairview Lakes Medical Center, resulting in the death of a security officer, Andrea Merrell. Merrell, 43, who succumbed to injuries sustained while responding to a patient elopement.
Hospital Security Incident Details and Emergency Response
The incident began when Jonathan Chet Winch, 35, fled from the hospital’s emergency department despite being on a hold, reports Fox9. Officers from the Wyoming Police Department responded to the emergency call at the hospital. Upon arrival, they found Merrell unconscious near a hospital security vehicle with its lights on. Winch was attempting to enter the vehicle, wearing dark sweatpants and no shirt.

Despite commands from the police to surrender, Winch did not comply, prompting the officer to deploy a Taser multiple times. Backup soon arrived, leading to Winch’s apprehension.
Security Footage Analysis and Incident Aftermath
Security footage from the hospital’s video surveillance system captured the altercation between Winch and Merrell near the hospital’s parking area, according to court documents. The video shows Winch, the larger individual, in a physical confrontation with Merrell, who was significantly smaller. The footage reveals Merrell on the ground, with Winch appearing to strike her repeatedly, causing severe head trauma.
Merrell was immediately transported to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, where she died from her injuries two days later, reports the County News Review. Reflecting on her service, White Bear Lake Police Department confirmed that Merrell had served as a reserve officer and was a former member of the city’s fire department.
Winch has since been charged with second-degree homicide in connection with Merrell’s death.
M Health Fairview’s Response
Fairview Health Services expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Merrell in a statement on LinkedIn, highlighting her valued contribution to their security team.
“Andrea was a valued member of our security team. Our hearts are with her loved ones and coworkers during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement read.
