Minn. Schools Receive $768K in Safety Grants

ALEXANDRIA, Minn. — The Minnesota Department of Transportation awarded grants to 92 schools, totaling $768,000 through the Safe Routes to School program. Alexandria School District received a $16,000 grant to encourage walking and bicycling to school.

The district will allocate the funds for the next two years to create a map for walking and biking to school, expand crossing guard programs, implement safety tips and evaluate the progress of the program, the Echo Press reports. The program will focus on Lincoln Elementary School, Voyager Elementary School and Discovery Middle School.

The district hopes to have the maps ready by the start of the school year.
