ST. CLOUD, Minn. — St. Cloud State University officials are putting plans in place to open a residence hall that caters to students who have gone through drug or alcohol treatment. According to recent studies, as many as one million college students nationwide are alcohol dependent.
Augsburg College, Texas Tech and the University of Vermont have already opened recovery-geared dormitories, the Grand Forks Herald reports. St. Cloud University will be modeling its program on Augsburg College’s StepUp program, which provides 30-minute weekly counseling sessions. Students must be sober for 6 months in order to apply.
Students in the StepUp program are required to sign a behavioral contract and participate in balanced and healthy living. Phillip Hernandez, coordinator of leadership programs and residential life conduct at St. Cloud, told the news source that providing recovery housing for students is important, since students in regular dormitories practice behaviors that recovering addicts are trying to avoid.
