A Minneapolis high school security guard was placed on leave after a student accused him of excessive force while responding to a fight.
The incident occurred at Apple Valley High School June 1 when a female muslim student and another student got into a physical altercation.
The 15-year-old student claims she’d been verbally harassed and called a terrorist by a male student, reports minnesota.cbslocal.com. The female student claims that school security guard Jason Rieck used excessive force against only her in his efforts to break up the fight.
Eventually, Rieck called for backup and around three Apple Valley police officers arrived to arrest the student. The student says the officers removed her hijab after putting handcuffs on her.
The Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan school district placed Rieck on administrative leave for the investigation and the Apple Valley Police Department is investigating the incident.
Police say the investigation has not shown that racist language was used during the altercation and that they have never received complaints about school resource officers in the district.
The student, who was initially removed from the school and suspended, was eventually allowed to return to school.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, said Muslim students at the high school reported feeling unsafe at the school following the fight and other alleged incidents involving school security guards. CAIR also called on the district to discipline Rieck, reports the Star Tribune.
