Measures to Lessen OxyContin Abuse May Increase Heroin Use

A new study suggests that while efforts to curb OxyContin abuse have been successful, addicts are now turning to more dangerous opioids, such as heroin.

A survey of 2,500 patients at 150 drug treatment centers in 39 states showed that 36% of them used OxyContin at the end of 2009, Heath Pop reports. At the beginning of 2012, only 13 percent of those patients still used OxyContin as their primary drug.  During that time, the percentage of patients who said they used heroin in the past 30 days increased from 10% to 20%.

The formula of OxyContin has been changed so that the pill cannot be abused by crushing or dissolving it in water for snorting or injection purposes.
