ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) officials are installing an emergency warning and storm detection system on its campus. The new system will be able to detect hurricanes and tornadoes within two miles of the campus, according to Daily Advance.
When a storm is approaching, the system will let out an alarm via a 500 megahertz tone. People as far as a mile away will be able to hear the siren. Additionally, the siren warning will feature five prerecorded messages that will notify students, faculty and staff when to seek shelter. Messages can also be sent out by text messages, E-mail and the Internet.
The system should be ready to use by Nov. 3, according to officials.
