MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Marquette University officials acknowledged on June 22 that the university has incorrectly handled student reports of sexual assaults. Now, the university will comply with state law and report crimes to the police.
Previously, the university gave students the option whether or not to report a sexual assault to the Milwaukee Police Department after bringing it to the attention of the university’s public safety department, the Journal Sentinel reports. But Wisconsin law requires that a private security agency that believes a crime has been committed must notify police.
Students will be told that an incident will be reported, but they will have the option of not speaking to police.
