On Tuesday, the husband of a patient at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, N.H., shot her and then turned the gun on himself.
In a Facebook message to family and friends posted just before the Dec. 30 incident, the gunman, Mark Lavoie, 50, called the shooting a “double suicide,” although police ruled the shooting death of Lavoie’s wife, Katherine, 49, a homicide. Both died of single gunshot wounds to the head, reports CBS News.
The gunman’s sister, Dorcas Lavoie, told the Associated Press, that her brother shot his wife “out of love” before killing himself. Both were found in a private room in the critical care unit of Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.
In his Facebook message, Mark Lavoie said his wife wanted to “escape the bi-polar demons” that had been plaguing her for years and that she didn’t want to continue on life support. His message was posted only a few minutes before police were called to respond to shots being fired at the hospital.
