A man was taken into custody by Waynesboro Police in the emergency department of Augusta Health on Dec. 22 after he brandished a gun in a nearby gas station.

Security at Augusta Health was notified of the possible presence of Maximiliano Martinez-Cruz, 22, and locked down the emergency department. Police found Martinez-Cruz sitting near the security desk, in possession of a 380 semi-automatic pistol and suspected methamphetamine, WHSV.com reports.

Prior to his arrest, Martinez-Cruz had threatened a man at a gas station with the gun and forced him to drive to a different location. The victim called the police during the drive, and Martinez-Cruz fled on foot to the hospital when officers arrived.

Martinez-Cruz was wanted on three outstanding felony warrants, including the distribution of methamphetamine, the distribution of marijuana and possession of a firearm while possessing a Schedule 1 or 2 drug.
