Man to Sue Drexel U. for Police Brutality

Published: November 15, 2012

UNIVERSITY CITY, Pa. — A 44-year-old man plans to sue Drexel University and its campus police force for seriously injuring him with a police car during a pursuit last year.

On Dec. 30, 2011, surveillance video captured Walter Johnson trying to enter locked buildings on school grounds. When police caught up with Johnson, he attempted to flee the scene, as he walked away from a halfway house without permission, CBS Philly reports. Video footage shows a Drexel police officer pinning Johnson against a wall with his patrol car.

The incident left Johnson with a shattered pelvis; his right leg is also shattered, 6abc.com reports.

Initially, Drexel filed attempted burglary charges against Johnson, which were later dropped by the Philadelphia district attorney. Officials for the university have declined commenting, citing a pending lawsuit.
