Man Kills 2 In ICU Shooting

FORT OGLETHORPE, Ga. — A man opened fire in the intensive care unit of Erlanger at Hutcheson on Jan. 6, killing his estranged wife and mother-in-law.

James L. Benson fired five shots from his .38-caliber revolver, killing Mary Sue Benson — his wife — instantly and mortally wounding his mother-in-law, Charlotte Edith Johnson, the Rome News-Tribune reports. After the shooting, Benson drove himself to the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department and turned himself in.

Both victims were visiting Mary Sue’s sister, who is a patient at the hospital.
