HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, N.J. – Hasbrouck Heights High School has agreed to allow a male student to wear a skirt or dress to class.
Michael Coviello, a 17-year-old senior, says the school’s no-shorts policy is discriminatory. The district bans the wearing of shorts from Oct. 1 to April 15.
In protest, the student wore a costume dress to school but was sent home by administrators. The district’s superintendent told Coviello that he would be required to wear skirts and dresses that were not costumes and were purchased at a retail store.
Coviello complied but was again sent home. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) then became involved and negotiated the agreement allowing Coviello to wear skirts to school.
