A third party vendor mailed Aetna Health Care brochures to 18,700 University of Virginia (UVa) students with their Social Security numbers printed on the address labels.
School officials learned of the error two weeks ago and are notifying the students who were affected, reports the University Herald. Aetna, which provides health insurance to UVa students, claims the mail carrier didn’t follow protocol and should have checked the labels before they were mailed.
In response to the breach, the school’s chief operating officer will lead a task force to review UVa’s policies and procedures to ensure personal information is properly protected, reports the Daily Progress.
