Louisiana Legislature Rejects Campus Gun Bill

On May 28, the Louisiana House of Representatives voted against allowing concealed weapon permit holders to carry guns on college campuses, according to theadvertiser.com. Eighteen members supported the bill, while 86 opposed it.

House Bill 27 was first introduced by Ernest Wooton, R-Belle Chasse, in 2008; however, he withdrew it before the House floor debate.

Campus officials, police departments and students opposed the bill.

Before the bill was killed, Wooten presented an amendment to continue the ban of weapons at any stadium, field or arena used for a sporting event. Another amendment exempted private and parochial universities because their private property rights would be violated if the universities were forced to accept guns. Additionally, one amendment exempted universities from liability if someone with a weapons permit shot someone.

In Texas, a similar bill allowing guns on campus was approved by the Senate; however, with the legislative session ending June 1, the bill will probably not pass because the House has yet to approve it.
