LEHIGH, Pa. — The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights will launch an investigation against Lehigh University in response to a complaint that the institution has failed to properly address incidents of racial harassment on campus.
The complaint was filed by alumna Susan Magaziner on behalf of students after a Nov. 6 incident at the Umoja House, a multicultural dormitory, was vandalized with eggs and graffiti that included racial slurs, The Express-Times reports.
During its investigation, OCR will determine whether Lehigh University has been in violation of Title VI, which prohibits discrimination of a student based on race, color and national origin. Additionally, the agency will work to help create an environment with effective anti-harassment policies and procedures.
