Legislator Wants Pennsylvania University Police Armed

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania State Rep. Tim Solobay (D-Canonsburg) is proposing that all California University (Cal U.) of Pennsylvania police be equipped with firearms.

Currently, the decision to arm campus police lies with each of the presidents of the state-owned universities. Officers at four of the 14 campuses are not permitted to carry guns, although they receive firearms training, just like their municipal counterparts. On two of these campuses, however, police are permitted to use guns in emergencies.

Solobay plans to present the legislation, which was suggested by the campus police union, the week of Nov. 28. Private colleges and universities would be exempt.
