VIRGINIA — Two identical bills would permit the State Comptroller in Virginia to pay as much as $11,000 in funeral and transportation costs following the death of an officer, even if officials haven’t decided whether the officer died in the line of duty.
Current law withholds benefits until investigators have made a decision, The Virginian-Pilot reports. A bill that advanced Thursday would also add campus police to the state’s list of law enforcement personnel eligible to receive line-of-duty benefits.
Virginia Tech is working to obtain benefits for the family of Officer Deriek Crouse who was gunned down during a traffic stop on Dec. 8. Current law does not guarantee such benefits for campus police; the proposed bill would.
