10,000-Person Party Sparks UConn Community Concerns

MANSFIELD, Conn. — The town council has called for increased law enforcement efforts to combat the problems caused by large-scale parties at the University of Connecticut. On Oct. 30, 8,000 to 10,000 people gathered at an off-campus apartment complex, alarming officials.

Police Sgt. James Kodzis gave a report to the council stating that parties at Carriage House Apartments in Sept. and Oct. regularly catered to 4,000 to 6,000 people. Mansfield police received, on average, 10 to 15 calls for assistance a night, Mansfield Today reports.

The council is working on a “three-pronged” approach to the problem, including an ordinance that would allow police to cite landlords whose tenants are repeat offenders. The council would also require permits for large gatherings on private property. In addition, discussions would be held with landlords and tenants to address ways to deal with large parties.

The parties are attracting many non-university students, which puts a strain on local emergency services.
