People who have been convicted of sex crimes against children and are listed on the state sex offender registry have been banned from attending classes at Lake Michigan College’s four campuses.
The decision was made in February after a man who was registering for winter semester classes told administrators he was a registered sex offender and his victim had been a child, according to The Detroit News. The man was not allowed to enroll in classes.
Currently, the college has suspended three students under the new rule. The students are considered suspended because they are allowed to take online classes until they are no longer required to register as sex offenders and are no longer on probation or parole. However, under Michigan law, sex offenders must register for either 25 years or life, so essentially, the students have been expelled, school administrators said.
The current ban does not include students convicted of a sex crime against an adult.
