Campus Safety Magazine announces the keynote speakers and program sessions for the Los Angeles Campus Safety Conference on July 23-24, 2015 at the Westin LAX in Los Angeles.
University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) Police Chief Dustin Olson will deliver the opening keynote Thursday morning, July 23, 2015. He will discuss the lessons his department learned after the May 2014 mass shooting that occurred near the UCSB campus in Isla Vista, Calif.
Register for the Campus Safety Los Angeles Conference.
“I truly hope no campus or community ever has to deal with what we did when six of our students were murdered, 13 more were physically injured, and countless others sustained psychological injuries,” says Chief Olson. “While this tragic event occurred off of campus, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of having prior relationships established with a wide-variety of stakeholders that makes all the difference in an effective response and recovery. Start now to foster the culture of active bystanders who work together for the safety of the community.”
Chief Olson has spent the past 25 years serving both the U.S. Marine Corps and the campus law enforcement profession. Before serving at UCSB, he held the position of assistant chief of police at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Los Angeles County Sherriff Jim McDonnell will deliver the closing keynote Thursday afternoon, July 24, 2015. He will address threat assessment procedures, awareness and clear lines of communication that must be an ongoing effort to prevent tragic incidents and ensure the highest level of campus safety.
Sheriff McDonnell served for 29 years at the Los Angeles Police Department, holding every rank from police officer to second-in-command. While at the LAPD, he earned that Department’s highest honor for bravery, the Medal of Valor, and helped create the blueprint for LAPD’s community-based policing efforts that have now become a model for law enforcement agencies throughout the nation. Sheriff McDonnell is a proven and respected voice in local, state, and national criminal justice organizations, having served as President of the Los Angeles County Police Chiefs’ Association, President of the California Peace Officers’ Association, a member of the California Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards & Training (POST), and a board member of the Peace Officers’ Association of Los Angeles County.
