LOS ANGELES – Riot police and approximately 20 Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) squad cars were called in March 21 to quell several gang-related confrontations that broke out at Fremont High School.
Approximately 25 students were involved in five or six fights, and dozens more were bystanders. There were no injuries.
According to Los Angeles Unified School District officials, community socio-economic problems and racial tensions may have been the cause of the unrest. Additional campus security will be deployed March 22, and teams will be sent in to help the students resolve their differences.
Immediately after the disturbances, Fremont High School went into lockdown. The school remained in that state until 3 p.m., when students were dismissed, leaving in small groups.
