L.A. County Picks Motorola for P25 Digital Radio System

The Los Angeles County joint-powers authority planning an interoperable communications system selected Motorola Solutions to develop a P25 digital radio system to pair with a public broadband system that will be developed separately.

Motorola announced the Los Angeles Regional Interoperable Communications System Authority (LA-RICS) during the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials’ (APCO) conference in Anaheim, Calif.

The radio system, when built, will provide mission-critical communications for more than 34,000 law enforcement, fire and EMS professionals. The five-year contract could be worth as much as $280 million.

Motorola has agreed to design, construct, and maintain the land-mobile radio (LMR) system that will feature Astro 25 Phase 2 700 MHz and UHF digital capabilities.

The new radio system will also connect first responders to regional, state, and federal agencies.
