Kona Community Hospital is in the process of implementing new security measures after bringing in a security consultant to perform an assessment.

The obstetrics unit was the starting point for security upgrades. The unit will now be locked at all times and a new system will require authorized staff to use electronic card readers and ID badges. Unauthorized staff will call in using a video intercom system, Big Island Now reports.

Hospital-wide upgrades will also be made, thanks to state capital improvement funds.
