Kentucky City Officials Seek Assistance From School District for Notification System

Published: July 29, 2008

PRINCETON, Ky. – City officials are looking at the local school district and industrial sector to help fund a storm warning system for the city. Currently, the whole town of Princeton only has one siren located downtown.

The current siren is 50 years old and has a half-mile radius. While the siren can be heard from farther away, officials believe that adding additional sirens throughout the city will help inform the entire community in the event of a severe emergency.

However, each siren costs $20,000, and the city simply can’t afford it. Instead, the school district and the industrial officials would purchase the sirens, and once installed, the city would maintain and insure the alert system.

Currently, the city is looking to install four or five warning sirens. In addition, the city would like to install instant alert receivers, which would provide specific information about the incident after the siren has been activated.
