Justice Department Report: U.S. 2004 Crime Rate Unchanged

WASHINGTON, The Justice Department reported Sunday that the U.S. rate for violent crimes was unchanged in 2004. Last year, violent crime, which is categorized as assault, sexual assault and armed robbery, was 21.4 victims for every 1,000 U.S. residents age 12 and older. Although the rate in 2003 was 22.6 victims per 1,000 people, the difference between the rates in 2003 and 2004 was statistically insignificant.

The rate for property crimes of burglary, theft and motor vehicle theft has dropped by 50 percent since 1993. The Justice Department survey also noted that the rates of rapes and robberies have dropped by almost two-thirds since 1993.
