AKRON, Ohio — A jury convicted a man charged for fatally shooting his hospitalized wife.
John Wise, 68, shot his wife, who was a patient at the Akron General Medical Center intensive care unit, on Aug. 4, 2012, in what many believed to be a mercy killing. During his trial, Wise testified that he couldn’t stand to see his wife of 45 years in pain at the hospital. One of Wise’s coworkers also testified the couple did not want to live bedridden or disabled, the Associated Press reports.
Jurors deliberated for three hours before convicting Wise of aggravated murder, murder and felonious assault, which carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison. Because of the unique circumstances of the case, a prosecutor has filed a motion to reduce Wise’s sentence for the lesser crime of manslaughter. If the judge agrees, Wise will be sentenced to six years, the Associated Press reports.
