Judge Tosses Out Penn State Antitrust Lawsuit

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — An antitrust lawsuit, filed by Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett, against the NCAA over its sanctions against Penn State University in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal, was dismissed by a federal judge on Thursday.

In January, Corbett claimed that the sanctions were arbitrary and illegal and would result in irreparable economic damage to the university, the commonwealth and its citizens. However, U.S. District Judge Yvette Kane cited that the governor’s complaint did not meet the legal standards of an antitrust case, CNN reports.

In addition to levying sanctions against Penn State, NCAA also fined the university $60 million and stripped 14 seasons of football victories from late head coach Joe Paterno. The $60 million fine is expected to be paid over a course of five years. It will fund an endowment with the goal of fight sex abuse and supporting victims.
