STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — A statue of Joe Paterno on Penn State’s campus was removed Sunday in the wake of a report that found Paterno and three other campus administrators had concealed sex abuse claims against retired assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.
Police and construction crews barricaded the street and sidewalks near the statue, erecting a chain-link fence then concealing the statue with a blue tarp shortly after dawn, the Associated Press reports. About 100 to 150 students watched as a forklift was used to move the statue, chanting, “We are Penn State.”
Penn State President Rod Erickson said the statue “has become a source of division and an obstacle to healing.”
