Doctors from Adventist Health System (AHS) were early adopters of the iPad, but the device is proving to be a security challenges for hospital IT departments. At AHS, ToughBooks and other tablet devices are centrally managed; however, iPads cannot be secured in the same way.
To cope with iPad’s lack of security, AHS corporate data security officer Sharon Finney created a “sandbox” network, Network World reports. This network has limited functionality and access so that hospital iPad use is more secure.
Also, several applications regularly used in AHS hospitals from companies like Citrix and Cerner are not yet available on the iPad. Doctors are using visual desktop solutions to get around this limitation while they wait for the companies to release mobile applications.
