MANVILLE HEIGHTS, Iowa — The University of Iowa’s Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter has been closed due to hazing.
The fraternity’s national headquarters said in a news release Monday that it had suspended the charter of its Iowa Beta chapter and expelled its members for failure to comply with its governing laws, the Des Moines Register reports. The university said it fully supports the closure and will investigate individual violations of its student life code.
“Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s board of directors will not tolerate hazing or behavior that violates risk-management policies or the general guidelines for chapter operations” the fraternity’s headquarters said in a press release. “The organization expects its chapters to adhere to stringent policies and practices that help our members become gentlemen and leaders, and to live up to our creed and principles.”
The chapter-house property, which is managed and owned by a private house corporation, will also be closed. Members will be asked to make other housing arrangements.
The closure comes five days after the fraternity headquarters suspended several members of its Gamma Chapter at Iowa State University for unspecified violations.
