A Florida television station claims that the state’s department of education (DOE) Web site has been underreporting the number of violent incidents at schools. And now Florida Education officials are acknowledging there have been some anomalies, according to CBS4.
The original report says that there were wide discrepancies between the number of incidents reported by the department and those actually reported by police.
State officials now say that CBS4 was correct in finding a discrepancy in the reporting of weapons incidents at Miami-Dade schools in 2006-2007.
However, according the television station, DOE officials say most of the discrepancies stem from different data sets, different agencies reporting them and different definitions of battery, assault, drugs and violence.
Still, critics of the DOE say the data being posted is misleading to parents.
