FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Cape Fear Valley Medical Center never reported the death of a patient who died after he was restrained by security officers with a choke hold on April 17. The man’s mother has filed a lawsuit alleging that the hospital and the officers acted negligently.
Police are now investigating the death of Andre Walker as a negligent homicide, the Fay Observer reports. Walker was schizophrenic and was off his medication when he was taken to the emergency room by ambulance on the day of his death.
A doctor decided to commit Walker to the first mental hospital with space. However, when no room was found, Walker became agitated and aggressive. When he tried to leave, a security officer placed him in a choke hold and three other officers restrained other parts of his body and got on top of him. After a few minutes, Walker ceased his struggling.
