Inmate Patient Fatally Shot By Officer

HILLCREST, Calif. — An inmate who charged a deputy at UCSD Medical Center Saturday was shot and killed Saturday, hours after he fought with deputies in his jail cell.

Deputies at the Central Jail found the man unresponsive in his cell, but when they entered the cell, he attacked them, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Deputies shot the man with a Taser at least once, but it was ineffective. The inmate was subdued after a long struggle, and had to be transported to UCSD Medical Center for treatment of his wounds.

When deputies loosened the man’s restraints so he could undergo a CT scan at the hospital, he broke free from his waist restraint and began swinging a chain from the restraint. A deputy fired a Taser and others struck the man with batons, but the inmate charged at a deputy and was shot.
