Info of 350,000 Students, Staff Exposed on Internet

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The financial accounts and Social Security numbers of more than 350,000 staff and students at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte were exposed to the Internet, according to a forensic data investigation team.

Information from “General University Systems” was exposed from Nov. 9, 2011, through Jan. 31, 2012 because of human error, wsoctv.com reports. There are no indications that there was “was any detrimental activity related to any possible access of that exposed data,” said campus spokesman Stephen Ward.

The university is referring current and former students and staff to a Web site for more information on the breach and concerns about identity theft.
