Info of 315,000 Patients Goes Missing

ATLANTA, Ga. − Emory Healthcare announced Wednesday that 10 computer disks containing the personal and health information of 315,000 patients have been lost.

The discs contained back up data from Emory University Hospital, Emory University Midtown and The Emory Clinic Ambulatory Surgery Center between September 1990 and April 2007, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Approximately 228,000 of the records included Social Security numbers. 

The discs were not obtained via hacking, according to president and CEO of Emory Healthcare, John T. Fox. They had been stored in an office and were removed sometime between February 7 and February 20.
