BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Classrooms that lock from the inside are the latest hot topic for the Indiana University (IU) task force who have been debating campus security improvements since the Virginia Tech shootings.
Many safety experts say locks are a simple and easy way to prevent a gunman from entering a classroom. But others point out that interior locks could just as easily be used to keep a gunman and students inside and keep law enforcement out, much like what occurred in Bailey, Colo., last fall.
IU President Michael McRobbie formed the task force after the April 16 shootings to find ways to bolster campus safety. The school has already conducted two tests of emergency sirens on campus and in downtown Bloomington, and is considering implementing an instant text-messaging system to send out warnings.
