Ind. Univ. Names New Deputy Police Chief

Published: April 18, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana University officials have named veteran lieutenant Laury Flint to the position of deputy chief of police for the Bloomington campus, within the Indiana University Police Department.

Flint started as a patrol officer in 1982 and progressed up the ranks to an appointment as administrative lieutenant in 2001. In the nine years she has held that position, she has been active with a wide variety of university offices and committees involved with monitoring and improving the safety of the IU Bloomington campus community.

As day shift lieutenant, in addition to supervising operations, she has assumed responsibility for a wide variety of department management tasks, and will take on a more active and visible role in leading the department as second-in-command.

“Laury has shown a great proclivity for organization and planning, which are highly valuable skills in an operationally dominated profession,” said chief of police Keith Cash. “Those abilities will serve us well in the position of deputy chief.”

Candidates for the position came from a variety of campuses, which is one goal of the recent formation of the system-wide Indiana University Police Department, according to Jerry Minger, IU director of public safety. “In this case, the person with the right skills for this particular position happened to be within the same office, but there are officers destined for leadership on every campus.”

Flint holds a Bachelor of Science from IU’s School of Public and Environment Affairs. She is an instructor for the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and is the liaison officer on IU’s All Hazard Incident Management Team. She is a 2007 graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy.
