HENRYVILLE, Ind. — Henryville Elementary School was destroyed by a tornado that struck the town March 2. However, several students and adults who took shelter there during the storm survived.
School officials made the decision to send the students home early on the day the storm struck, MSNBC reports. Bus driver Chris Spencer was about to drop off the last student on the bus when the sky darkened. Since the student lived in a mobile home, Spencer chose to take her back to the school for safety reasons.
Several other students were also brought back to the school, and took shelter inside. A bus that returned to the school was swept up by the storm and destroyed.
