GOSHEN, Ind. — Officials at Indiana University Health Goshen Hospital (IU) have fired eight employees who refused to mandatory flu shots.
The hospital alerted its employees in September that they would be required to get the vaccine in response to rising concerns about the spread of the potentially deadly illness, ABC News reports. According to a statement, the IU implemented the mandate to promote patient safety based on recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Medical Association and the American Nurses Association.
The hospital did not allow exemptions for medical and religious reasons, although some of the fired applications submitted applications.
Hospital spokesperson Melanie McDonald stated that the hospital concluded that it would be irresponsible to allow nurses and other staff members who refused to take protective measures to protect patients with already compromised immune systems.
