IMs Keep Information Flowing at Texas University After Fire

SAN ANTONIO – After the fire at Our Lady of the Lake University May 6, university officials relied on instant messaging (IM) to connect to the campus community.

When the fire occurred on the campus, the entire phone and E-mail networks were shut down by the blaze, which in turn caused the university to seek other ways to communicate with students, faculty and staff.

Prior to the fire, IT administrators integrated an IM platform into the system through Blackboard Connect. They urged students and faculty to download the Pronto IM program, which enabled many to schedule classes and review sessions through instant message.
