Illinois Law Mandates 5 Safety Drills Per Year

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., A new Illinois law, called the School Safety Drill Act, has gone into effect, mandating that public and private schools hold at least five safety drills each year.

The drills must include a bus evacuation drill, tornado drill and three fire drills, one of which must involve the local fire department. The law also encourages schools to hold drills covering shootings, hazardous materials and bomb threats. These would involve local law enforcement agencies but are not mandatory.

The School Safety Drill Act requires school officials and emergency responders meet once a year to review emergency response and drill plans.
